The Events Committee is made up of Parish Councillors and co-opted members of the local community. It meets regularly throughout the year to organise the annual Country Fayre, held on the second Sunday of July at the Recreation Ground.
The biennail Scarecrow Trail took place last year on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th September 2016. The event raised £1055 from the sale of trail maps and a raffle for a hamper. All the proceeds have been donated to Kelly Turner Fundraising. Many thanks to the more than 50 households who made scarecrows and the people who went on the trail and helped us raise this sum of money.
There will also be a prize for the best scarecrow! (to be announced)
Most of the profits made from events, with the exception of this year’s Scarecrow Trail go towards supporting future events. Some money is set aside for the annual community grants scheme for local organisations. In 2016, grants were made to: River Village Hall Trust, River Primary School PTFA, Crabble Corn Mill Trust and River Bowling Club. Unfortunately there will be no grants programme this year due to the poor weather affecting income received from the 2016 Country Fayre. Any groups or organisations are welcome to contact the parish council for grant support at any time. Contact the parish clerk for more information.
Lasy year’s Country Fayre was held on Sunday 10th July. Despite the weather, many people came along to see the attractions and the performers who kept going, even in the rain. Planning for the 2017 fayre, to be held on Sunday 9th July, are in progress. The events committee are looking for more local volunteers to help with preparations or to help on the day.
